Welcome to Ms. Kooy's Room
Cheers! I'm Ms. Kooy! I am a proud East Kentwood Falcon, Harvard Crimson, Michigan State Spartan, Calvin Knight, and Holy Cross Crusader.
I began as a Falcon in 1999 as an English teacher at East Kentwood High School’s Freshman Campus where I taught Freshman English and Drama for seven years. An opportunity to transfer to the 10 – 12 building came up and I jumped at the chance to teach British Literature. I now teach Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, as well as several other specialized one semester courses: African American Literature 12, College Writing 12, Contemporary Literature 12, Creative Writing 12 and Shakespeare 12. These are heavily academic but more guided than taught classes, which are student driven; for students who like to be challenged and inspired; who love to read and write; would love to rekindle passion for learning that is sometimes lost over time. These courses also address the ideas of social justice and personal responsibility.
I am a wife, and a mum to two children. I am a proud, founding member of River City Improv, the longest running, consecutive member Improv Comedy Team in North America. Click the link above see what we do. I am a graduate of Calvin College, and the Graduate Schools Of Education at both Michigan State University and Harvard University. I am thankful for all of my educational experiences. I love photography, spending time with my husband & kids, traveling overseas, Improv, reading, being with friends, and being an MSU Spartan Mum, and elite cheer mom. Finally, I lead trips overseas for adults to various places: Rome (Summer 2022), Paris (2016, 2023), London, Edinburgh, and Dublin (2014, 2015).
